Go directly to our list of businesses that offer learnerships.
South Africa has a very high unemployment rate, but at the same time it has the development of qualified people to fill many vacancies in different sectors. In an effort to address both issues, the government is looking at practical ways to educate the public and organize training programs for school results and unemployed adults. The introduction of the learnership has made a big step towards achieving this.
What is a Learnership?
Learnership is a career-based learning program. This means that classroom lessons at a college or training center are related to a hands-on work experience. We learn best when we can practice what we learned in class.
By performing visual tasks that are read in class, we can see what we have learned and what we have not understood. This allows us to ask the student to clarify that part of the lesson until we fully understand it.
Learnerships are part of internationally recognized qualifications directly linked to the profession. This means that what you learn in an apprenticeship is not just some of the tasks you will be given as you complete the apprenticeship; and it becomes part of the higher qualifications that you can also learn by studying other subjects or short courses.
Each apprenticeship has a specific qualification. For example, an artist such as a potter or beautician has a level 4 qualification, which means that if you want to become an artist you must complete four different apprenticeships (grades 1, 2, 3 and 4). There is no deadline to do so as the quality of each level remains constant in the system and focuses on reaching the full potential.

How does the learnership work?
In the past, education offered in schools and other educational institutions has not been very similar to the world of work. This meant that people with all the information entered the workforce, but there was no effective way to get the job done.
Internal training and guidance of companies do exactly the opposite; learn “how” to perform certain tasks without “why” what to do. To successfully complete a task, you both need to know.
Learnerships learn “why” and “how” by forming an agreement between a student, a learning provider and an organization or business. All learnership contracts must be registered with the Sectoral Training Authority (SETA) in that particular field, which ensures that the learnership is of a high standard.
If you are accepted into an apprenticeship, you must sign two formal contracts; Study agreement and employment contracts. The internship agreement tells you exactly what responsibilities you, the training provider and your employer have. The contract of employment is for the internship period. Apprenticeships range from 12 to 24 months.
If you are unemployed, you will receive an allowance while you are in an apprenticeship, which means you will pay for expenses such as travel and meals. If you are already employed, you will receive your regular salary
During apprenticeships, you will spend time in the classroom, whether in the enterprise or organization or in other buildings, and all the time you are actually working in the company. It is important that you take the opportunity to develop your skills, gain knowledge and increase your strengths. An apprenticeship is a perfect way to show your coaches and organizations what you know, because it can lead to endless jobs at that company or organization, so take your learners seriously.
You are expected to complete certain written and practical tasks while studying for reading as part of your study. Apprenticeships are based on outcome, which means that you are tested (tested) on what you learned during the different phases of the apprenticeship, and not just at the end.
You will receive an official certificate stating your qualification and indicate the area where your skills developed during the learnership if you are considered successful at the end. These titles are nationally known.
Completing an apprenticeship is not a guarantee that you will be employed, but many students are employed by businesses or organizations where they did their studies. Even if the company doesn’t hire you, you have a much better chance of working in an apprenticeship than one.
